DJ Greybush Presents: Moonshine Music Mix

Twolcott dropped a country mix a little while ago in this post right here.  If you didn't grab it then please do so now...it's fine, I'll wait.  We have similar beliefs on country music.  I used to say that exact same thing, "Anything but country."  Greybush trivia fact, the first CD that I ever listened to was a George Strait CD.  My brother had gotten it in a prize pack at a high school basketball game or something.  I believe we had just gotten a CD player but I was holding tight to my tapes, because technological evolution sucks.  So when I say I don't like country that's the sort of shit I am talking about.  Him and Dwight Yokham, Randy Travis, Allan Jackson.  Those dudes and also almost everything modern, Kenny Chesney, Toby Keith, yeah no thanks, I get why girls like the new stuff, it's just not for me.  That picture of Kenny is creepy as fuck too.  I would totally do Carrie Underwood though...oh and she has quite the voice.

When, Twolcott, who needs a better name, told me he was doing a country mix, I said, "OH EM GEE me too!!"  I squealed and jumped a little when I said it and then tried to grab his hands like I have seen girlfriends do in the movies after a shared exclamation, but he would have none of that.  I applaud his restraint and his awareness of the fact that he is not a character in a Rom Com, should that be hyphenated?  Is it capitalized?  Should I just never use that word again?

I had started my country mix months ago, I remember telling someone that I started it and they got excited and I then I informed them it had a total of 6 songs and I was too busy making important mixes, like Yes Homo Pop Princess Mixes, and I couldn't be bothered to deal with such a sub par musical genre as Country, after that I flicked my cigarette ash at them and adjusted my ascot.  But, as luck would have it while I was working on one of the Yes Homo mixes, I noticed a strong country influence and sound in a lot of the songs.  So I started tossing those into the country mix, and then I went through the rest of my music and dug up some of the classic country jams that had made me soften my anti-country stance in my youth.

I think George Jones- King of The Road was one of the first country songs that I liked as a cognizant and aware musical being.  I appreciated Hank Williams Sr. I think I only heard him on Pepsi commercials and in "The Shawshank Redemption" though.  Dean Martin helped me appreciate the older stuff as well, I was already on his jock for his swing, jazz, stuff and he gently held my hand as he led me into the world of classic country.  He covered a lot of the classic jawns and this mix kicks off with his laid back version of, "Walk The Line."  I noticed that Twolcott and I have a lot of the same songs on our mixes but they are different versions.  It's almost like an album battle.  I'll set up the match ups later.

Dean Martin- I Walk The Line

Is there a better voice in country music than Patsy Cline's?  If you say Bonnie Raitt, I'll cut you.  She really follows Jay-z's advice and makes the song cry.  She lathers her tracks with emotion.  Her voice is hauntingly beautiful and I imagine it sounded just as ghostly and chilling in it's actual time.  For anyone who was like Twolcott and me, if you still say you don't like country after listening to Patsy...uhhh...you're a stupidhead?  Timeless classic shit right here.

Patsy Cline- You Belong To Me (Not on the mix)

Do you guys know who this is?  Do you recognize the awesomeness that is Marty Motherfucking* Robbins?!! *May not actually be his middle name, but it's safe to assume he has fucked some mothers in his day*   Just look at this guy.  His awesomeness almost leaves me speechless...almost.  Marty is a boss, he writes that Desperado shieet, that outlaw cowboy mista lovah lovah music.  Tales of gunfighters ranchero mamacitas and horsies.  He probably wouldn't call them horsies though.  His song, "Devil Woman" is one of my favorite songs, not favorite country songs but overall songs.  It contains a note that is just spectacular *fans myself with hands.*  Listen to it and pay attention to that note drop or whatever that thing he does is.  Oh and also, just  look at that guy!!!  Pure class.

Marty Robbins- Devil Woman

The rest of the mix is a conglomeration of the old and new.  Songs by modern artists that still had that country sound, that twang, the same sense of musicality.  Brenda Lee be reppin the old school, while people like Lily Frost be holding it down for the newbies.  The Lily Frost songs are actually off of her album, "Lily Swings," which I bet kicks ass, but these particular songs still have that country flava to me.  Also since this is a Greybush mix, it will not rock your face off, it may in fact put you to sleep.  Just grab a glass of sweet tea, sit on your porch swing and watch your youngins while they scamper about and shoot gophers or something.

Here is a list of the aforementioned Song Battles:

Jambalaya (On The Bayou): Hank Williams Sr. vs. Brenda Lee

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry: Dean Martin vs. Hank Williams Sr.

Walk The Line:  Dean Martin vs. Johnny Cash

Tennessee Waltz:  Patti Page vs. Connie Francis
