Audience Participation: California Soul
So I was listening to Greybush's Soul Mix 4 and Soul Mix 3 and noticed that he blessed us with two different version of California Soul (originally written by Ashford and Simpson). I looked in my iTunes library to find out just how many versions of this banger I had and I found 4. I personally like the Messengers version the most, but I am more interested in finding out which version you like best. And for those of you that watch a lot of TV, yes, this is the song used in the Dockers commercial featuring San Francisco.
Marlena Shaw - California Soul (From Soul Mix 3)
The Messengers - California Soul (From DJ Shadow's Product Placement)
Diplo - California Soul (Remix from Soul Mix 4)
Gerald Wilson - California Soul (also from DJ Shadow's Product Placement)
BONUS: Gangstarr - Check the Technique
"Youre lackin the vernacular, Im slappin ya and cappin ya And closin your jaw, cause you cant mess with gangstarr The guru and premier always dope with the blessed beats Dance your ass off hobbes, check the technique"

I fell in love with Diplo's version 2 years ago. Still my choice of the 4... though it sounds identical to the Soul Mix 3 version.
ReplyDeleteI think that's why Diplo's remix was nice, he didn't mess with it too much. Some of those Verve remixes desecrated the originals. Diplo just sprinkled it with a touch of modernity.
ReplyDeleteThey're all good. I don't usually go for instrumentals, but I'm really digging the Wilson track. The intro to the Diplo remix is amazing, though. It's a toss up...
ReplyDeleteBut the messengers version is so grimey!!!!
