The Kim Sisters

You offend me, you offend my family, has a great post about the Kim Sisters. I believe that SK and I first saw them when we were looking up Kim Jung Mi, who has a great song on Tres Ouais' awesome60's mix. Not sure if the download link still works for that, but if it does you should grab it. A little bit about them from You offend's me post:

"By 1958, they were recruited by an American manager and flown to Las Vegas, where they had a popular revue show at the Thunderbird Hotel. In 1959, they were “discovered” by E Sullivan and would perform 22 times on his nationally televised show over a 14 year span. The Sisters soon became very savvy and were able to bring over the rest of their siblings and had a contract with the Stardust to perform as a family revue."

Pretty amazing success story especially for the time. Check out the whole post here for a more in-depth read. Also check out their skeelz in the videos below. They can get down on the glockenspiel? Xylophone? Other impossible to spell instrument? My brother and I formed a group when we were little, but we never made it to Vegas, apparently no one wants to pay $150 a ticket to watch two Asian American male kids re-interpret, "Some Like it Hot" as a spoken word act about Global warming...maybe if we had added a Glockenspiel bit.

Soul Mix 2

This mix starts with a track that I had a hard time placing in the soul category.  It is actually 60's French pop penned by the infamous Whitney harasser and pop legend himself, Serge Gainsbourg.  The track is sung by France Gall

Aww look, he's teaching her how to use a Tommy Gun, see kids that's how you woo a lady.  I bow to you Serge.

An english cover version by April March was featured in Grindhouse by Tarantino.  It has some soul sensibilities for example the horns and the rhythm section.  The music would be perfectly at home backing up a girl group from the States, who really cares though?   It's a good song whatever category you put it in.  Check it out below.

People could argue with the second song as well but my definition of soul is not very rigid...also I have no standards.  From there it goes into Menahan street Band, Curtis, Aretha, James, William Bell's- I Forgot To Be Your Lover, which deserves it's own write up.  Stuff like that.

A Post-Mix Era?

One of the main reasons I like the idea of posting my mixes on this blog is that I've completely given up making mixes for my friends. Screw them. They all know what they like, and they see my mix as more of an annoyance than a gift. Granted, I'm exactly the same: yeah, thanks for the mix, but I'm still sifting through the 10 GB of pirated music I downloaded last week. Music I know I'm at least curious about, unlike your "Summer Jams" mix of dub step, twee pop, and crunk bangers. It seems that all this unlimited access to music has super-saturated our hard drives – and our attention spans – to the point where the prospect of adding anything we haven’t personally selected amounts to, well, a hassle.

I, however, still believe in the mix. Precisely because there is so much music to choose from, I love reaping the rewards of someone else filtering through it for me. And DJ Greybush is one of those trustworthy audiophiles. Hopefully some of you will feel the same way about me. My tastes are eclectic, but most of what I'll be posting here will be rock and pop stuff, usually with an indie twist and more often than not including some foreign languages. (I'm an unabashed francophile, so if you aren't down with the cheese-eating surrender monkeys, then I am not your DJ).

For my first mix, however, I'm going (mostly) retro with a 60s Pop Mix (mostly French, but not all actually from the 60s). Enjoy!
