Audrey and I have been testing out the new hip hop mix. I try and tell her there is more to hip hop than just crack rap, but if they aren't talking about moving o's she just rolls her eyes and does that dismissive wanking motion. Reaaaal classy Audrey, maybe you could do with some more culture!!!
Well despite Audrey's protestation there is a mixture of both crack rap and conscience rap on the mix. I know some of it is too preachy and kumbaya for some people. *whispers Audrey* But how can we appreciate the sweet without the sour? How can we appreciate spandex without lunges. Very well done video for the song, "The Age of Steam" by Andy McNeil who performs under the name, The Maple Mountain Sunburst Triolian Orchestra.

Part of the Stone's throw music video contest a previous entry was posted as part of this Eye Candy. Man this one for, "Light Works," from the same competition is amazing as well. Such a sucker for that style. I am really glad that a lot of design and animation is going back to that look. Always loved this song too.
Peanut Butter Wolf and Michael Rapaport shopping in Amoeba records. This little video is done in part to promote the A Tribe Called Quest documentary, "Beats Rhymes and Life," that Rapaport directed and PB Wolf served as the music supervisor on. This has nothing to do with the mix, but Yumiko Kayukawa does some awesome Japanese pop art stuff. Incredibly clean paint lines. It almost looks digitally rendered...she rules.
I have had this thing done since before I left for LA, which was months ago. I kept messing with it, adding and subtracting, re-ordering, it's a real problem. So I have to just say enough is enough and get this thing posted. So here it is Hip Hop mix 9.

Action Bronson is a beast. He has flow, lyrics, dude is the complete package and this beat is filthy. The horns!! The horns!!
There is also a song he did with Statik Selectah which is equally awesome on the mix. But you can start by sampling this one first.

I didn't include any of Azure's music from his new mixtape on this mix but at least one of these songs would have made the cut if I had, had it in my hands before I compiled this. Azure' aka Justin Park was previously featured in this eye candy with his song, "As The Globe Spins." I have only heard two tracks from him but I appreciate the beat selection on both of the cuts that I have heard. His rhyme pattern seems a little forced/off kilter on some parts of, "Embedded Love" but overall he makes nice joints. You can grab his, "Illusions of Oasis" mixtape for free here.

For those of you who don't know, this all started out as a private email list. If you were not on that list you may have missed out on some goodies. I feel like I should be moving forward and only posting new mixes, but since we are not asshole taskmasters I feel bad not offering the chance for people to do make-up work. Here's a couple of sample tracks. First up Freeway and Jake One off of, "The Stimulus Package." This Freeway and Jake One album is wearing the crown for one of the best hip hop albums of 2010. I know it's February, you shush. Just watch, this shit can last, Jake One and Freeway can do no wrong.
This is going to be on the next hip hop mix but this is just a another supporting argument for why this album is so good. It's tailor made for my ears to love it. The Roc, Rhymesayers, and The Chef reppin the Wu, all on the same track? Say no more I'm in, where do I sign up?
Freeway and Jake One- One Thing featuring Raekwon
Next is a track by Fashawn from Fresno. This is a dude that gives me hope for hip hop. Check out his track, "Samsonite Man," featuring Blu and produced by Exile. That's pretty much an all-star track in my world. Blu is another dude that doesn't make me cry and run through the streets shouting, "HIP HOP IS DEAAAD!!!" Then you add the fact that Exile is one of my favorite producers and it's musical magic. You will see Exile all over my mixes, that's one soulful dude. These three show that there are still real cats out there doing real hip hop, you just have to turn off the radio and scratch below the surface a little bit.
