Here is a Jean Grae mixtape that dropped a while ago. I haven't given it a listen, mixtape tags bug the shit out of me. But Jean is a solid lyricist sponsered by Talib and signed to his Blacksmith label. She has put out some of my favorite songs, and no not just favorite songs from a female emcee, I mean favorite songs regardless of gender. Her work with Blue Sky Black Death was head noddingly fantastic.
Peter Gunz of Uptown Baby, we get's down baby fame's son has been putting out tracks for quite awhile now. He may also have a reality show, but that could have just been a bad dream, since like most of my nightmares I think Nick Cannon was in it. I read an article where Bumpy said that he took some married lady who was trolling for a "dangerous" one night stand back to her hotel where he proceeded to sleep with her. Afterward he stole her shit and jumped out the window. That's just one of the reasons I am a fan of Bumpy. He was also blowing up Solar all over the internet after Guru's passing. The theme today seems to be Asians and Wu-Tang, sort of correlated, I heard we drafted them in the racial draft. Model Minority recently dropped their gigantor 22 track mixtape entitled, "Tiger Sons." I am sure pretty much everyone knows what the title references but if you are out of the loop you can check out the article here. I am not sure if I have ever heard a Model Minority track, so really I have no formed opinion on them. I assume they are overtly political, I doubt they are clubby, and I am guessing that out of 22 tracks they should have at least one good one, but I could be totally wrong. So with that sparkling recommendation you can grab the mixtape at their site here.

About the project via Angry Asian Man, The two Filipino American emcees recently joined forces during a week-long visit to Hawaii to create an album -- "laced with beats by local Hawaiian producers and rounded out by some of LA and Seattle's most talented beatsmiths" -- that pays homage to the islands." It was Michael Jackson's birthday yesterday. I hope everyone poured some Jesus juice out and grabbed their crotch to celebrate. I for one was never swept up in the MJ hysteria back in the day. He kind of scared me as a a kid, and I didn't understand why people straight up passed out when they saw him. I didn't understand it as a kid, and to this day I have no idea who would have that sort of sway over me. Who would you see and just immediately black the fuck out on? I can think of some people that might scare me into fainting, but no one that I would be so excited to see that I lose all bodily function. Busta Rhymes popping up out of nowhere all angry and growly with a weapon might make me pee myself a little bit, but that's a different sort of scenario.
I do appreciate MJ more now, I always liked him when he was black, even back when I was a kid, but now I appreciate more than just the Jackson 5 era. Dude had some hits. I still haven't embraced his entire catalog. It's not like I am bumping, "Remember the Time" but the 80's jams don't get a dismissive wank from me anymore. Obviously I don't have to make an argument for him as an icon or talk about his influence, he was kind of successful at the whole music thing and his songs speak for themselves. Thank god because interviews with him are fucking weird.

It seems like the only hip hop news that has peaked my interest lately has been Reflection Eternal related stuff. I am working on the next hip hop mix, but there is a lot of garbage out there right now. I sit down, try and start listening and curse myself for blindly downloading without previewing. For real, I have some straight bullshit on my computer. I actually have a mix cut down to the standard hour and twenty minute time limit. But it has filler...it has a Fat Joe track, and that just seems a little wrong, like I could do better. I have been trying though, I listen to some hood dudes, spit that trap music over whack beats, get fed up and switch to soul, which I find much more enjoyable to sift through. I am easily distracted when faced with opposition. So to any of the straight up hip hop heads, I apologize, you may see nine Pop Princess mixes before I get the next hip hop one done.
