Upcoming Shows

One of the best things about living in a major metropolitan area, besides the abundance of hookers, is the fact that when people go on tour they usually pencil us in for a little session.  Just think about those poor people who live in places like Ekalaka, Montana, population 410.  Do you think the Backstreet Boys ever think about them when they are making their tour schedules?  I think not!!!  Yet they do think about us, and thank God for that.  We get two shows!!  How many does Ekalaka get?  I am going to guess a big fat zero, and that's just not fair to the good people of Ekalaka.  I would glady give them one of our Backstreet Boy shows, shit I will be even more generous and give them both of them.  Without that one that is missing it's just not the same.  Free (whoever is missing)!!!  Or R.I.P. or Good decision to not cling so pathetically to your past glory!!!  At least their groupies are legal now.  Go get em boys!!

There are always a ton of great shows in the Bay Area, despite the aforementioned BSB (That's how the kids say it right?) show.  After the jump some real shows that are worth attending.

The Fillmore
Murs will be blessing the bay with his crazy hair and awesome flow on Thursday, 4/29/10.  Tickets are $20 and can be purchased here.  All of you Asians that want to protest his song, "Asian Girl."  Can show up in full force.  I'll be the one ignoring your cries of racial injustice and bobbing my head.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros will be rolling through town on Thursday, May 29, 2010.  Tickets are $25 and can be purchased here.  This band of merry miscreants had a super solid album and their live show is not one to be missed.  They look like they just wandered in to town from the desert or burning man, but they can get down for sure.

Here they are performing on NPR's tiny desk series.

Sage Francis has a show on Friday, June 4, 2010.  If you are a fan of slam poets turned emcees turned weirdos this is just the show for you.  Strange Famous has some crazy flow, most of it too abstract for my tastes, but he can rip a mic, you can't take that away from him.  He is a real emcee, the kind that can battle you off the top, spit poetry, and ride a groove, it's too bad the grooves he rides are so weird.  Tickets are $22.50 and can be purchased here.

Saturday 6/05/10 is the night of the US Air Guitar Championship-San Francisco Regional.  Watch weirdos shred the air and rock out like they were in a stadium full of adoring fans.  I heard it's entertaining, maybe not so much up my alley, I lose interest in songs when they get to self indulgent guitar solos and that seems to be the main focus of this event.  If you are interested cop tickets for $20 here.

Holy shit why are tickets to this show $50?  I have heard of these Wonder Girls before, which must mean something, because I am not that well versed in Korean pop stars.  Korean porn stars I am your man, singers, not so much...actually I can't even think of  a Korean pornstar..I suck at this game.  "Wonder Girls with special guest 2PM. VIP tickets include Meet & Greet with Wonder Girls and 2PM, photo opportunity, and a tour gift. Meet and Greet will be on day of show from 1:00 - 2:00 pm." Maybe they can sign my body pillow.  If you are into Asian girl pop groups you can get tickets hereThe show is on Sunday 6/13/10.  Upgrade to the VIP so we can carpool together.

Aziz Ansari will be having a three show run from Thursday 8/19/10-8/21/10.  Tickets are $35.50 and can be bought right huuurr.  He is a funny guy, not sure if I need to see a whole show but it is guaranteed to be better than the Wondergirls.

The Warfield

Lupe Fiasco and B.O.B. are coming to the Warfield on May 4, 2010...I just realized I probably don't need to be putting the year of the show huh?  Whatever, Lupe is one of the new school guys that I actually like.  Inventive, fast, clever flow, a mix of subject matter, good beat selection.  Dude is good.  B.O.B. is in the same class, a little more versatile because of his ability to carry a tune, but a really good emcee.  Not able to be contained in a genre box he melds and blends styles with ease.  Sometimes he loses me, I prefer his straight up hip hop joints, but whatever he does, he does it with skill.  Tix are $34.25 and can be purchased here.

Seriously?  Can we go this show just to see the fucking weirdos that go to shitty shows like this?  COOLIO AND THE INSANE CLOWN POSSE!!11!!!  I almost passed out with joy when I saw the flier.  Let's paint our faces and then...not really sure what we do after that, listen to horrible music, with angst ridden dirty, trashy, ex-Korn fans and drink Fanta?  You know my birthday is coming up, just saying tickets are only $29.75, and the show is on Sat, Jun 5, 2010.

FUCKING RAINBOWS!!! YO!!  SHIT'S MAGIC!! FUCK SCIENCE.

Now this is a show I can support.  I saw Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings once at the Warfield with Jeffro, who I actually had to drag there, I almost had to go by myself *shakes head at Jeffro.*  Oooh weeee was that a good show.  You really can't lose with the Dap Kings playing live.  You add Sharon belting out some soul over the top of those solid instrumentals and it's pretty untouchable, unfuckwitable.  They will be coming to town June 25, 2010 on tour to support their fourth album "I Learned The Hard Way."  (Someone should probably review that, I have it but I haven't really listened that intently, *shakes head at self*)  Tickets are $22.25 and be purchased here.

By the time I post this it will be too late, but Cypress Hill is at the Warfield on 4/20, is there a better group to see on 4/20?

The Fox

Nas and Damian Marley will be coming to Oakland on May 25, 2010 in support of their new album, "Distant Cousins."  Haven't really heard much besides a few singles that didn't blow me away, but Nas is good, Marley is good, should equal a good show right?  Tickets are $39.50 grab them here.

She and Him, Zooey and M. Ward, will be blessing the East Bay with their Indie goodness, Saturday May 29th.  Tickets are $29.50 here.

She of the pixie voice and harp skills, the wonder that is Joanna Newsom will be playing the Fox, Monday August 2, 2010.  Tickets are not on sale yet, they will be available on April 22nd.  Here.

The New Pornographers have a show on Sunday July 18th, tickets are $27.50, grab them here.

Slim's
Wiz Khalife, one of the XXL Freshman class will be rolling into Slim's on Tuesday, May 11th.  $15 Tickets can be bought here.  On the Slim's site it says Fashawn and makes no mention of U-God.  I would much rather see Fashawn, actually I would rather see Fashawn than Wiz.  Should be a good show, Slim's can get crowded and hot but it takes you back to college, when you were front row and didn't need to sit down to rest your feet every half hour.  Tough it out old people!!

Check out the calendar of Slim's sister club, The Great American Music Hall.  I didn't see anything of interest but that's just me.

The Independent

The Tallest Man on Earth, who I am pretty sure is a straight up liar will be at the Independent on Sunday, May 9th.  I am barely familiar with him, the only reason I mention him is I thiiink I was listening to my huge list of unsorted music and he came on and I then sorted him into a mix.  That's sort of a big deal.  It also could have been that I heard him, looked at the playlist in a what the fuck is this sort of way and remember his name from that.  How about you see if you like him and get back to me.  Tickets are $14.  Holla.

Little Brother is tight.  They were tighter with 9th, but they are still good.  Last time I saw them they had sound man issues and it was pretty much a fucking disaster.  The first time I saw them, it was fucking amazing.  Phonte put on a Rick James wig and started singing "Mary Jane," things were sparked and the entire crowd was singing, "I love you Maaary Jaaane."  Shit was ill.  Friday, May 29th, tickets are $20, get some.

The Shattuck Down Low

The Gza, the man with the Liquid Swords will be blessing Berkeley with his presence on April 22nd.  $17 tix if you hurry up and buy now.  Twolcott told me he saw him on the "Liquid Swords" tour, where he must have been short of cash and agreed to go around doing the entire album at shows.  T, said he didn't even know all of the lyrics, haha really?  Your most solid album, the shit you are known for and you don't have it down?  For shame Gza, for shame.  Hopefully he has his shit together for this show.

This is for Jeffro.  He loves him some Devin the Dude, me not so much.  May 3, 2010, $15.

Aceyalone and Sunspot Jonz, May 13th for $10.  Two of the dudes that I have been rocking with since college, maybe not so much as of late but Acey is a solid dude on the mic.  On that Freestyle Fellowship real emcee tip.  Sunspot the Bay legend from Living Legnds is a fucking weirdo but came out with some bangers back in the day.  He brings energy that's for sure.  Shit's only $10.
