Upcoming Shows

March

Friday, March 16th, Questlove will be spinning a DJ set at the Independent.  I have seen him spin before and he puts down some solid stuff, which you would expect from a music junkie like him.  The problem for me is I don't do the dancing in the club thing...and I am old.  If you enjoy getting your groove on though, I recommend checking him out.  $30 tickets can be found here.

Sharon Van Etten and The War On Drugs are coming to the Independent on Wednesday, March 21st. Tickets are $20 plus service charges and doors open at 7:30. Sharon was previously on Yes Homo Pop Princess Mix 6, and possibly some of the Indie mixes. Grab tickets for the show here. (Update: Tickets are sold out)

Bahamas was featured on Indie Mix 11 with his cover of Wreckless Eric's, "Whole Wide World."  He will be at Brick and Mortar in San Francisco on, Wednesday, March 21st.  This is the same night as the Sharon Van Etten show, but relax, the decision of which show to attend has been made for you.  Sharon Van Etten tickets have sold out, Bahamas has not.  Aren't you glad you avoided that dilemma?  Grab $8-10 tickets for Bahamas here .

Yellow Ostrich, is coming to town on, Friday, March 23rd.  I like Yellow Ostrich's covers better than his original stuff.  I bought his new LP on vinyl and I wasn't super enthralled by it.  He does interesting things and at times he has it all locked in and the end product is great.  Other times I feel like it's some abstract experimental bedroom studio tinkering that I would rather not be a part of.  Would it be wrong to go to his show and tell him to perform a whole Beach House album?  Tickets are $12 here.

April

Wednesday, April 11th, M. Ward will be playing the Fillmore.Tickets are super money, clocking in at $42 after service charges.  Is it worth it to you?  If it is get them here.

The Sandwitches have been on a couple of mixes.  The last one being Indie Mix 10.  They will be at the Brick and Mortar in the city on, Thursday, April 12th.  Tickets are $10-12 and you can get them here.

This one is a biggie for me.  This is a dude that I check tour schedules for and plot his movements on my wall map with pins and string.  Well guess what?  That string is headed straight for the Fox in Oakland.  My days spent praying have paid off.  Andrew Bird will be coming to town Friday April 13th.  Tickets are on the pricier side at $37.50 before service charges, but it's Andrew fucking Bird!!!  *Tries to whistle and just spits on himself*  He has been on at least two mixes from the blog that I can think of.  You may remember his appearance on Indie Mix 10...or maybe not.  Either way grab tickets for what is sure to be an amazing show here.

If Andrew Bird isn't your thing you have options on April 13th.  Damien Jurado, Peter Wolf Crier, and Dear Indugu will be at the Bottom of The Hill.  Damien was actually on the very first indie mix I made for this site.  I feel like we have featured Peter Wold Crier before too but maybe their name has just been floating around my ipod.  Tickets are $12 and you can get them here.

Childish Gambino will also be at the Fox in April.  He stops into town on Thursday, April 19th.  Tickets are $25 before the service charges.  He loves Asian girls and Asian girls love him...just ask SK or DANakaDAN. He sings a bit too much for me, but I have really particular taste when it comes to hip hop, actually I am not even sure if this is completely hip hop. The straight hip hop joints he has done I have enjoyed though. His comedy comes through in a lot of his raps and I appreciate a witty emcee. He also gets really personal and I give props to a rapper that is unafraid to show that part of himself on stage.  One of his songs was on Hip Hop Mix 10. Grab tickets for the show here.

Bon Iver, forever known as Bonny bear to me, will vie for your attention on the same night as the Childish Gambino show.  He will be at the Bill Graham Civic Audiotorium on Thursday, April 19th.  Dude is a grammy winner now, so watch out!!  Tickets are $45 and you can get them here.

Tennis is a solid new band with sounds that are right in our wheelhouse here at Stereofat.  I know both Tres Ouias and I have featured them on previous mixes.  They will be at the Independent on Monday, April 30th...Monday??  Damn it!!!  If you are not a 60 year old like me then this will be a great show worth attending.  They are touring in support of their sophomore album.  Tickets are $13-15 and you can get them here.

May

I always said that I didn't like bands that were big enough to play stadiums.  To this day I have never been to a stadium concert.  People who play in stadiums are Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake, not exactly my cup of tea.  Stadium tickets are also super expensive and you end up being miles away from the stage.  I guess I am happy the Black Keys have made it to stadium level rockers, but I kind of doubt I will pay the ticket prices for this show at Oracle arena.  Tickets range from $47.25 to $64.30 and you can get them here.

Daptone Represent!!  Lee Fields and the Expressions are one of the few Daptone acts that I haven't managed to catch live.  That is a shame, but a shame that I can do something about.  They will be at the Brick and Mortar in SF on, Saturday, May 19th.  Tickets are a little pricer at $20-25, but they do have a lot of band members to feed.  Get yo tickets here.

June
Have you guys heard of Mayer Hawthorne?  Mayer has a headlining show at the Fillmore on, Saturday, June 16th.  Tickets will be $35 after service charges and will be available to purchase right here on March 4th.  He will also have a show with Foster The People as the headliners on Friday, June 29th at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. Tickets for that will be $37.50 and they are available here.

Upcoming Shows

Here is a small sampling of upcoming shows in the Bay Area.  Pretty light schedule so far, but some must see action coming through.  We'll try and fill this out as more shows pop onto our radar, but for now have a look at what's coming up.

February

The Budos Band and DJ Afrolicious will be at the Independent on Thursday, February 23rd.  Tickets are $20 plus service charges and the show starts at 8:00. We are all huge fans of the Dunham/Daptone label so if any of their stacked roster is on tour we highly recommend checking them out. Seriously some of the best live music you can hear.  The opener Afrolicious was previously written up on the blog in this post.  Buy tickets for the show here.

Well I have some good news and some bad news.  The good news is that, Thao and the Get Down Stay Down will be co-headlining with John Vanderslice at The Bottom of the Hill in San Francisco.  The bad news is that it's the same night as the Budos band show, Feb. 23rd.  First world problems, which awesome musical act do I go see?  Tickets are $18 and you can grab them here.

March

Sharon Van Etten and The War On Drugs are coming to the Independent on Wednesday, March 21st. Tickets are $20 plus service charges and doors open at 7:30. Sharon was previously on Yes Homo Pop Princess Mix 6, and possibly some of the Indie mixes. Grab tickets for the show here.

Foxtail Brigade

I saw Laura Weinbach & Anton Patzner playing a couple months back. They were on 4th street in Berkeley which is a cesspool of rich home furnishing stores and yuppies, so I fit right in. Laura was enchanting. She is one of those street performers that makes you stop and watch. Such a pretty voice, with Anton's accompaniment on violin it's really great stuff to pause and observe. They are both in a band called, The Foxtail brigade and can be found playing all over the bay area. Check out their bandcamp here or their website here. They have a show coming up on December 2nd at the Regency Lodge. I believe they are opening for Jane Birkin. More info can be found here. Nice, more in-depth article on them by Rasputin's located here.  Check them out in action below.

A song off of the album, "Reverie."

That's what the She's said

I know, I know, it's been awhile, does that mean that we can't just immediately get back to business? In the words of my life coach, can we not just go, "straight to third?" When he says it isn't even a question but more of a proclamation of intent that you really have no choice in, he says those words and his hand is already...sorry that's not what this post is about. Or is it? *Keith Morrison voice*

While I have been away I have not been without music. We have hippy drum circles at occupy. Tear gas canisters make a terrible percussion sound when bounced off of a peaceful protester's head. The tinkling of urine in our hobo encampment is like softly raking a cymbal. We chant, we sing, we unify!!! Shattered glass and shaking spray cans are the music of my revolution!!!...I totally wasn't at occupy, I did get some new video games though so you can draw your own conclusions as to where I have been. Arkham city!!! *Flourishes cape and spills coffee mug*

Now this is where the post could have began. We went to see Thao and the Get Down Stay Down at the Great American Music Hall.  This was at the tail end of a crazy weekend.  Congrats to Mr. and Mrs. Jeffro!!  The opening band for Thao was, The She's. They were awesome and adorable. Check out their myspace here.

The group consists of Sami Perez, Hannah Valente, Eva Treadway, and Sinclair Riley. The crazy thing is that all of them are about sixteen years old. Apparently they have been playing together since mid-elementary school. They site influences like, the Morning Benders, the Donnas, Beach Boys, and Girls, which proves they are way cooler than you when you were a sixteen year old. I think when I was sixteen despite all my rage I was still just a rat in a cage or I was waking up in the morning and stepping outside taking a big breath and getting real high, or was that middle school?
What's going on?  My name is Mystery, I'm here to talk about kino-escalation and bouncing.  Everyone creepy as shit?  Good.  Everyone have their goggles?  Good.  Let's do this, you like magic, guuurl?

It doesn't really matter, what does matter is how great these girls were.  Thanks to Sami’s years of experience in the SF Girls Chorus they have awesome vocal harmonies. They are like a more alive Mountain man on surfboards with more instrumentation. They kind of remind me of Tennis, Best Coast, or The Ronettes and that's not a bad thing.  60's influenced girl pop, which is a pretty close approximation of the most perfect word combination for my musical leanings and interests. Their stage banter was so great too, they were seriously adorable, and I don't use that word a lot, I stopped after that incident at that Biker bar, what? It was an adorable lazy eye.
The She's at The Great American Music Hall

They were just so happy to be there on stage and they made you instantly happy to be there with them. Thao said she saw them at the Noe Valley farmer's market which in itself is fucking adorable. *Thao smells the kale, music drifts above the arugula and past the artisan falafel maker, her ears perk up* "You there!! Awesome band full of bad assery and happiness inducing musical skills, you are coming with me!!" *They all ride off on an extra long horse* I am pretty sure that's how it went.

At the end of their set I bought a copy of their ep from one of their mothers, literally, no joke, how great is that?  Check out their Myspace for samples of their music. They are really talented musicians and a solid band. They have a great knack for song arrangement and structure. Here is there video for, "Running."

If you would like to see them in person, SK and I will be going to their record release party at the Bottom of the Hill on Saturday Dec. 3rd. They are playing with Tijuana Panthers and Melted Toys. Grab your tickets for $10 here

Upcomings Shows

Some of the shows from this Upcoming Show post are still in play. It's not too late!!!

January
The Pharcyde are having an unreasonably priced show at the Shattuck Down Low on Saturday, January 8th.  $23 tickets are on sale now.  Not really sure what I would pay for the Pharcyde, but I know that I won't pay $23.  If you are in serious need of some nostalgia then this show is all you.  I saw them back in college and that's probably good enough for the rest of my life.  Not that they sucked, but shieeet it's not like they are Tribe.

Mac Miller who impressed me with a couple tracks off of his K.I.D.S. mixtape will be at Slim's on Thursday, January 20th.  Doors open at 8:00, show starts at 9:00 and $17 tickets are on sale now here.  Look for two tracks from him on the next hip hop mix.  He has that nice old school sound, with a nice flow.

I love Zion-I and this is right in my neighborhood.  They will be at the New Parish on Friday, January 21st.  Tickets are $23 and located here.  I know these guys are worth $23.  See them if you haven't or even if you have, they don't disappoint.
The weirdos from Deerhoof are having an album release party at The Great American Music Hall on Friday, January 28th.  Get your $19 tickets here.  They are a little too weird for me, but if the subject of a Panda ever comes up I automatically sing the Deerhoof refrain, Panda, panda...

Black Thought, leader of the infamous Roots crew will be solo for an upcoming show at the New Parish.  The show is on Wednesday, January 26th and it starts at 8:30.  Tickets are about $28 and can be found here.  I love Black Thought, but I love The Roots as a collective unit more.  I think if I went I might just be sad that Questlove wasn't there.  I know he can get down though, so I am sure the show will be solid.

February

If you like seriously depressing music, or earnest song writing with seductive female vocals do I have a show for you.  Cat Power is performing at the Fillmore on Friday, February 4th.  Doors open at 9:00.  Not sure how much the tickets are because they are not up for grabs yet.  They will be available on Sunday, January 9th.  Here.

If you require your emcees to have an ivy league pedigree and reference Foucault in their rhymes, then...I kind of hate you.  I don't really hate these guys though.  Das Racist, the jewels of the hipster hip hop scene, do they count as jewels if I just made that scene up?  Either way, they will be at The Independent on Wednesday, February 2nd.  The show starts at 8:00 and you can purchase $15 tickets here.  I like his hat...and his beard.

I have heard that Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone.  I forget who told me that though and it's completely unrelated to KRS One having a show in Berkeley I just thought it sounded like a nice segway.  This man was literally born across the street from the park that birthed hip hop.  His credentials are bona fide.  He will be at The Shattuck Down Low on Friday, February 18th.  $16 tickets are available here.

April

Cults, whom I had the pleasure of seeing open for The Morning Benders are playing at the Independent on Thursday, April 14th.  Tickets are not available yet, but they will be $13 and for sale here on Friday, Jan 7th.  Really solid group and I think their star has been rising with their song, "Go Outside," which was previously featured on the last Indie Mix.  I base this theory on the fact that I saw a friend post their video on his Facebook, they're HUGE I tell ya.
