Hip Hop Mix 11

"Audrey, I swear every time I come over here it's all Raekwon, all day...I knew there was a reason I liked you.

Audrey and I have been testing out the new hip hop mix.  I try and tell her there is more to hip hop than just crack rap, but if they aren't talking about moving o's she just rolls her eyes and does that dismissive wanking motion.  Reaaaal classy Audrey, maybe you could do with some more culture!!!

Well despite Audrey's protestation there is a mixture of both crack rap and conscience rap on the mix.  I know some of it is too preachy and kumbaya for some people. *whispers Audrey*  But how can we appreciate the sweet without the sour?  How can we appreciate spandex without lunges.  Grab the download here or hit the jump for a preview.  Lots of videos and pictures so enter at your own risk.

A sort of in-depth look at the track list.

1. Hopie Spitshard- Dulce Vida (Have we discussed Hopie before? Local from SF, graduate of law school, solid emcee. This beat has that sample that is just right in my wheelhouse. These are the type of hip hop songs I love.)

2. Azure'- So Nice (Great sample and beat. Pretty similar to Hopie's production, which means I will be a sucker for it. Azure' always has a nice flow too.)

"Got these rappers all mad like a slipknot band
Need relief? Pinch a leaf from your ziplock bag.
But your boy is bringing hip hop back."

Check him out below with just his friend, Arnold providing the beat.

3. Exile- Klepto (Exile who normally stays behind the boards does double duty on this track off of his solo album. If you don't know how I feel about Exile; in my opinion, he makes beats that you could play on repeat even if the vocal track was just a cat throwing up on loop. So with that said, I loved this beat. In terms of Exile's vocals I actually didn't hate him as a vocalist. He was entertaining, clever, better than 9th Wonder when he tries to rap.  He probably could have let the beat speak instead of taking the vocal on the chorus though.  His engineering sounds muffled as well, it was probably on purpose but I might have preferred a clean vocal track.)

4. Rey Resurreccion- Bobby Fischer (Man, this beat is so good. This song was originally mentioned here. Rey's got some lines in it.)

"100% like A grade
And ya'll still smoking bammer like it's 8th grade."

5. Shaun Boothe feat. STS- 1, 2, 3, (Really feeling all of the beats up to this point. The more impressive part of this song is the emcess though. Crazy lyrical delivery. Shaun has a really nice flow on this, he rides the beat perfectly. STS has the later verses and it's pretty crazy. It's stink face worthy. STS is so impressive with his wordplay. He should be famous, is he?)

From Shaun's verse:

"Don't let the next man buzz be your alarm clock
Rude awakening
I plant seeds in the field of dreams
Grow two or three money trees
Wait until it drops like leaves on the ground then I rake em in."

STS' verse

"Cake me up like birthday wishes
All about green like earth day bitches
Hope for a nigga like first date kisses
this STS
Short hand like midgets
Get it?"

6. Raekwon- Molasses (Man I was thinking it would be a good idea to transpose the lyrics and explain them as if to a 70 year old suburban white lady, but jesus it would be like a 30 page essay. That's some dense stuff.

"No Rosemary when he mentioned the Rock of Gibraltar it was just a way of saying I have a big rock on my pinkie finger, a rock is a synonym for diamond. Orca was a killer whale, Malcom Jamal Warner was on the Cosby show. He said that his Aunt bought him a gold rocket launcher in Rwanda. No that doesn't mean anything else, he really meant gold rocket launcher, I imagine it would be heavy Rosemary."

7. Fresh Daily feat. Suede Jury- Field Notes (Big fan of Fresh Daily, great flow and beat selection.)

Fresh Daily:

"I'm who you looking to be
I'm Mike Tyson minus the teeth
I'm not biting
A tight writer and a tighter emcee"

8. Big Sean featuring Lupe Fiasco (produced by Exile)- Wait For Me  (Off of the "Intro to the Outro" mixtape by Exile.  Solid production like always, maybe a little too sing songy vocals from Big Sean.)

9.  Blu (produced by Exile)- Amnesia (Remind) (The original, "Amnesia" was a great track, this is also nice.)

10. Decipher featuring Sam Ock- Move Right On (Some inspirational do-gooder hip hop.  I don't hate the chorus on this.  Decipher has velvety vocals too.)

11. Sean Price (Produced by Black Milk)- Barry Ruff (Y'all know I love me some Sean P.  Feeling the spooky production by Black Milk and like usual feeling, P's verse,)

12.  Mac Miller- Cold Feet (Super similar production to the Sean P joint.  Mac does a lot right.  There aren't that many tracks that I don't like from him.)

13. Planet Asia- Last Air Benders (Planet Asia, let's loose on this track.  Dope beat, nice shout outs to some of the originators too.)

14. A-Plus and Knobody- CREAM (This was from one of Jeffro's posts.  Two members of the the Hiero camp are handed one of the greatest hop hop beats ever.  This goes back to my opinion of Exile's beats.  I could listen to the C.R.E.A.M. beat even if the vocal was a hobo hocking a loogie.)

15. Rey Resurreccion- Old Rust New Bang (Title track from Rey's album available for free from his site.  I usually don't go for songs with gun shots as part of the beat, but this is passable.)

16. Game- Big Dreams (Cookin Soul remix)  (I actually like the Game.  I even approved of him when he was on, "Change of Heart," even before he got his butterfly tattoo.  I just saw him and thought that guy will do big things in the gangsta rap world.  I should have signed him then.  Cookin Soul is reliably good, they come through here like they are known to do.)

17.  Talib Kweli- Start It Up Freestyle (I swear this is a diss track about Tom Cruise.  He talks about standing up on couches and how his girlfriend is a beard.  I just can't see how these two would have beef, I doubt they are at the same clubs.  I don't know how Tom could have offended him.  I take joy in imagining the different scenarios though.)

18. Blue Scholars- HI-808 (Geologic has a nice timber in his voice.  Very emcee worthy qualities to his vocals,  These beat isn't bad either.)

19. Nottz Raw and Asher Roth- Enforce The Law (This is off of the Nottz x Asher collabo album, "The Rawth Ep."  I still enjoy me some Asher and Nottz has been known to do good things with beats and vocals.)

20. Decipher- Too Cool (I like these kind of beats too.  Not entirely chopped and screwed, but that slowed down repetitive chorus.)

21. BBU featuring Das Racist-  Please No Pictures (BBU stands for Black Brown and Ugly.  Das Racist are those ivy league rappers who rap about stuff straight from their textbooks but are also not ashamed to drop a, "Saved By The Bell" reference.  That was a great episode.)

22. Square Off featuring Cory Gunz- Square Off (Talking intros are weak, the scratching at the end goes on for too long and I don't even know why you are scratching that part.  It's not an important phrase and it just sounds annoying.  The beat is good and some parts of the verses are good.)

23. Jon Conner- Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay Freestyle (Jon Conner destroys this track,  Like Whoa.)

24. Blu, Freddie Gibbs, and Homeboy Sandman- In (Yeaaah that's a solid lineup.  Listen and learn children)

25. Wu Tang Feat. Sean P and Trife- Laced Cheeba. (Uhh yeah, Sean P and Wu? Of course you can be on this mix, don't even wait in line. *Motions them forward*)

26. GLC, Curtains, and Rakaa (prod. by DJ Babu)- The Roadhouse (Awesome tingly beat by Babu. Not sold on the transitions between the verses. Rakaa is fucking solid though.

"Rakaa/dilated ill savage like we mad at rap
Splash the continent me and GlC ran the map
Curtains for you rappers this a closed session, that's a wrap"
