"Audrey, I swear every time I come over here it's all Raekwon, all day...I knew there was a reason I liked you.
Audrey and I have been testing out the new hip hop mix. I try and tell her there is more to hip hop than just crack rap, but if they aren't talking about moving o's she just rolls her eyes and does that dismissive wanking motion. Reaaaal classy Audrey, maybe you could do with some more culture!!!
Well despite Audrey's protestation there is a mixture of both crack rap and conscience rap on the mix. I know some of it is too preachy and kumbaya for some people. *whispers Audrey* But how can we appreciate the sweet without the sour? How can we appreciate spandex without lunges. Feeling this shirt so much I accosted a dude on the bus (no homo) to find out where he got it. This isn't where he got it, but you can get Exact Science shirts at one of my favorite online music/clothing spots, the Giant Peach.
Another sample of Exact Science's T-shirt line.
Grab the mix here or hit the jump for samples and the whole tracklist.
This has nothing to do with the mix, but Yumiko Kayukawa does some awesome Japanese pop art stuff. Incredibly clean paint lines. It almost looks digitally rendered...she rules.
I have had this thing done since before I left for LA, which was months ago. I kept messing with it, adding and subtracting, re-ordering, it's a real problem. So I have to just say enough is enough and get this thing posted. So here it is Hip Hop mix 9.
Action Bronson
Action Bronson is a beast. He has flow, lyrics, dude is the complete package and this beat is filthy. The horns!! The horns!!
There is also a song he did with Statik Selectah which is equally awesome on the mix. But you can start by sampling this one first.
Action Bronson- Consensual Rape (beat by Tommy Mas)
I didn't include any of Azure's music from his new mixtape on this mix but at least one of these songs would have made the cut if I had, had it in my hands before I compiled this. Azure' aka Justin Park was previously featured in this eye candy with his song, "As The Globe Spins." I have only heard two tracks from him but I appreciate the beat selection on both of the cuts that I have heard. His rhyme pattern seems a little forced/off kilter on some parts of, "Embedded Love" but overall he makes nice joints. You can grab his, "Illusions of Oasis" mixtape for free here.
More samples of songs that are actually on the mix, tracklist and download link, behind the Jump.
I think the hip hop mixes are just barely more popular than my country mixes. Meaning two people grabbed the hip hop ones and one person got the country. So with that in mind who wants some new hip hop?
Mac Miller has some skill, he has two songs on the mix. How throwback does this video sound? Well done child, well done.
I hope everyone had a magical Christmas. I come bearing belated goodies for everyone.
I enjoy me some whistling. I saw a pbs special on dogs and the Shepard had a crazy number of different whistles to communicate with the dog. He even had a whistle that meant turn back you missed one of the sheep. It made me realize that my fondness for whistling may perhaps just be a sub-human primitive response to past animalistic instincts. I also just saw something on tv and the gang on the show used a whistle to notify the other members of their position when separated in the dark. Crazy, anyway I guess I still like whistling, it's the caveman in me.
Advertisers know this as well. There was two commercials in a row and they both had whistling. The first one came on and I thought wow that's a coincidence I am making a whistling mix. Then the second one came on and I realized the advertisers had my number. So I immediately bought some Gerber Baby food and a Subaru Legacy. You won this round corporate consumption. Your sweet whistle was like a Siren's song. It's like that number 23 movie where once you notice it, it seems to be everywhere. Not sure why that was a bad thing, because I never saw the movie and it's just a number but that's ok, you freak the fuck out about it Jim Carey.
So to celebrate this addiction I made a mix of songs that all feature whistling. During my "research" (shout out to google) I found that manypeople feel the same way and were way ahead of me in terms of compiling lists and asking questions like what is more gimmicky whistling or children's choirs? Most of them had similar songs, so I had to research even further (scroll down farther) and try and find some less famous whistling songs.
I also googled whistling to find a picture for this post and the dude above came up. Apparently it's a still from a documentary about a whistling competition in North Carolina. Sounds like a scenario for a Christopher Guest film. I am kind of interested in seeing it now. Especially since it's called, "Pucker Up: The Fine Art of Whistling."
Do you think he is listening to hip hop? He looks like a Westside Connection type of guy to me. I can see him C-walking all over another bird's impala. This nice little childlike slice of artistic goodness comes from Drake Brodahl and is up for grabs on his etsy.
Damn when I saw this video titled, "Double Dream Hands," posted as choreography to, "Planet Rock" I was praying to Zeus that it was the Afrikaa Bambaattaa song. I am sure someone has remixed it by now but the original is pretty noteworthy in its own right. "Now rock out, hand bursts, shoulder, shoulder, chin." It's a pretty amazing video. I just wish it related to the point of this post, hip hop music. How could I not share this though?
Sean Price is hip hop. If a song has a feature from the man formerly known as Ruck from Heltah Skeltah and Camp Lo, I pay attention. Dude drops gems on the regular and has been doing so for a long ass time. He appeals to both the underground heads and the crack rap fans. With street level stories presented in a perceptive intellectual Brownsville vernacular. Sean P's talent as an emcee is legendary. Here he is rocking Slim's in San Francisco at the Duckdown 15 anniversary show that I should have gone to.
Last but not least, here is his video for, "Figure Four." This was supposedly on his "Kimbo Price" mixtape from 2009, but I can't find it on my track list. P has undeniable flow and his lyrics are refreshingly stripped of materialist braggadocio, "These are the words of a thousandaire," is kind of as real as it gets. He will have a solid feature on one of the tracks on the mix. Grab that and the whole thing behind the jump.
New Hip Hop mix. I am not really sure if it sucks but I have been slacking on mixes. So something is better than nothing...maybe?
Update, no idea why the links
keep breaking,
I hate your new player Jeffro!!
Download link should still work.
I listened to the mix in the car
and it's just alright,
it starts out super hood,
then segues into some more soul laced stuff.
Samples below
I like Raekwon. I also like the sound of whistling, coincidentally this song contains Raekwon and whistling. I can't whistle a tune, for some reason I can't raise or lower the pitch, I don't know how. I can whistle like a bird but that's just random noises as opposed to a melody. Thank you for listening. *sits down*
Somebody please give MURS a tub of hair relaxer and a comb because he is "the hardest working man in show business". After a slight hiatus from his Warner Brothers deal, MURS is back and with a fury. He'll be dropping 10 albums, in 10 months, each with 10 tracks. The first album, titled Fornever is produced by the 9th Wonder and scheduled to release on March 30th. The MURS and the 9th wonder; a combination as classic as peanut butter and jelly, biscuits and gravy, sex and candy. The first single, 3:16 Part 2, is basically a story of all that happened between their original collaboration in 2004 and where they are now.
Had this in the pocket for a bit. Time to let the beast out, if I was a glittery Liam Neeson I would say, "Release The Kracken." But, since my bedazzler jammed on me last week that is not the case. I only got my trapper keeper, seven skorts and 1/3 of my bathrobe done before it died on me. So I will just say here you go.
For those of you who don't know, this all started out as a private email list. If you were not on that list you may have missed out on some goodies. I feel like I should be moving forward and only posting new mixes, but since we are not asshole taskmasters I feel bad not offering the chance for people to do make-up work. It's not your fault, stop throwing a tantrum, get up off the floor, you have the chance to redeem yourself right now.
This is the original Beat Hooker mix, the beats are fiyaaah. *Pours champagne on a toddler* No idea who's toddler that is but they need to be taught to appreciate expensive champagne and stop crying. You'll never be a video ho son...you're useless.
Here's a couple of sample tracks. First up Freeway and Jake One off of, "The Stimulus Package." This Freeway and Jake One album is wearing the crown for one of the best hip hop albums of 2010. I know it's February, you shush. Just watch, this shit can last, Jake One and Freeway can do no wrong.
This is going to be on the next hip hop mix but this is just a another supporting argument for why this album is so good. It's tailor made for my ears to love it. The Roc, Rhymesayers, and The Chef reppin the Wu, all on the same track? Say no more I'm in, where do I sign up?
Freeway and Jake One- One Thing featuring Raekwon
Next is a track by Fashawn from Fresno. This is a dude that gives me hope for hip hop. Check out his track, "Samsonite Man," featuring Blu and produced by Exile. That's pretty much an all-star track in my world. Blu is another dude that doesn't make me cry and run through the streets shouting, "HIP HOP IS DEAAAD!!!" Then you add the fact that Exile is one of my favorite producers and it's musical magic. You will see Exile all over my mixes, that's one soulful dude. These three show that there are still real cats out there doing real hip hop, you just have to turn off the radio and scratch below the surface a little bit.
If that's your kind of shit, then come get some more below. Hip Hop Mix 12-05-09
My latest hip hop mixes have been all about the beats and the hooks. They have been hooker beat or beat hooker mixes if you want to phrase it in a weird unnerving way. The way to get me connected to a hip hop song is to use a soul sample. Kanye and I see to eye to eye on that front...and very little else. A soul sample or Preemo scractches are about the only hooks I approve of. I approve of Jake One, Ant, Exile, Just Blaze, Kno, 9th, Statik Selectah, Amp Live, 6th Sense, those are my type of producers, some soulful muthafuckas.
Choruses lose me, long winded modern R&B dudes make me tune out. I accept Nate Dogg, based on our history, but Akon and T-Pain can join the likes of Mario, or whoever else is the hot hook singer at the present moment and vamoose, they whack to me. Listen to Jay, "I don't need no hook for this biiiitch!!" Those are just the bare minimum requirements for me listening all the way through. I don't even like old west coast choruses, however blasphemous it may be, that shit just makes my ears seal themselves off and makes me want to hit skip on a track. Even some of the old Wu-Tang choruses bug me. I just feel they detract from the emcee and the beat. I just need a beat and a emcee, I don't need a R&B cat doing some Jodeci shit in between verses. Can't stand that whole genre or era of R&B.
Anyway these tracks all made the cut. I think once you listen you will get a feeling for what I dig. Sometimes the mixes all sound like they were produced by the same dude. It's usually a soul sample, scratches or a short sample that is looped over and over. Features on this include: B.O.B., Asher Roth, Blu, Talib Kweli, Truck North, oh and check the Wu-Tang vs. Beatles mash-ups. I ignored that shit for a couple months or more, because seriously, enough with the mash-ups. It refused to go away though so I checked it out and it was actually really well done. So now it's your turn.
