Yes Homo Pop Princess Mix 7

I am not really sure where I stumbled upon her work, but I think Rosie Hardy takes some pretty intriguing photos.  Check out more of her work here.

I feel like her pictures evoke the spirit of the pop princess mixes pretty well. That languid, pretty, sort of melancholy place that some of the songs inhabit. Her pictures be like the music personified nah mean?

Grab the mix here. Hit the jump for the tracklist and samples.

The mix starts with a song from Ash Reiter.  I feel like they have been mentioned on here before.  SK bought their cd from them months ago when we saw them playing in an alley during Oakland's Art Murmur. Really solid local band that was able to rise above the riff raff of hipsters and yuppies that co-mingle on First Fridays. We don't make a habit of buying cd's (usually just groceries) from people in alleys but they were impressive. Check out their site here.

The video below is not on the mix but a sample is a sample. Beggars can't be choosers...which is actually not true based on field studies I have conducted. Have you ever offered a beggar something and they were like, is it gluten free? I don't know hobo do you want my saag paneer or not?

Jon Brion may not sound like the sort of name that normally finds it way onto these mixes but he is responsible for the backing music on the second track. The song originally comes from the horrible, "Popeye," movie starring the king of subdued and restrained acting, Robin Williams. It was written by Harry Nilsson who I really like and the singer is Shelly Duvall as Olive Oil. Weird right? Brion did the soundtrack for the not horrible movie, "Punch-Drunk Love" and he sort of remixed the Duvall song into something pretty great.

There are a lot of Girl group type sounds on the mix, because that's just kind of what I do. Tennis falls into this category. They pop up on a lot of mixes around here. Their new album is out soon if not already and they are touring as I type this. They are coming to the Independent in the city on Monday April 30th. Buy tickets for $13 here. The She's have that nice girl group sound as well. They were written up in this previous post. Peach Pop Kelli is in the same vein, if you couldn't tell by a song called, "Doo Wah Diddy."

Ellie Goulding's cover of Bon Iver's "The Wolves" is on here. Did anyone see the reaction to Bon Iver winning Best New Artist at the Grammys?

That's just one of the many people who thinks the band's name is Bonny Bear.  I just...don't even know what to say.  Observe more of these intelligent reactions at the Who Is Bon Iver tumblr, located here.  If that's not enough to make you weep for society, don't worry.  The stupidty does not end there, because the little miscreants that populate twitter also didn't know who Paul Mcartney was...yikes.

Let's move on so we don't get more depressed about the state of society.  Some of the more poppy ladies show up on the mix as well. Kiersten Holine's cover of, "Hideaway," is super simple and sweet. She was written up previously here. She has a total of two covers this time around. Pop Princess regulars; Priscilla Ahn and Clara C also make appearances. The whole track list can be found below.
