13 Songs Vol.2

This is a mix of mostly up-beat pop songs, with a little Alt-Country interlude in between just to keep things random, er, interesting. In the interest of full disclosure, yes, three of these songs are from the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack (Team Jacob! [no homo]). I originally downloaded it just for the new Thom Yorke song, but then found some nice Bon Iver and Lykke Li tracks, so I threw them in. Anyway, who says a shitty movie can't have a decent soundtrack? Speaking of movies, a gold star goes out to whoever can name the 1980s documentary sampled in the Radio Dept. song, "Never Follow Suit". One hint: MF Doom also sampled this film. Enjoy!

R.I.P. Guru

The hip hop world lost a legend yesterday. Gifts Universal Rhymes Unlimited, born Keith Edward Elam, died on April 19 after a long battle with cancer. He was 43. Crazy that this all went down after he was in the headlines for a completely different medical problem a couple of months ago. Guru had gone into a coma after suffering a heart attack, DJ Premier, had tweeted that the rapper underwent a successful surgery and was recovering, although he was still under a medically-induced coma. Supposedly he recovered from all of that and was then taken by the cancer that he had been battling for over a year.
*Update* Guru's family released a statement today.

"The Elam family wishes to thank the fans of our son/brother/father uncle/nephew/cousin Keith aka GURU for the outpouring of love, concern and support.

Our hearts are broken by the loss of someone we loved so much. GURU was devoted to his young son, who will most keenly feel his absence.

GURU suffered from multiple myeloma for over a year. Accrued complications from this illness led to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. As a result, GURU was in a coma from mid February until his death and never regained consciousness. Early on the morning of April 19th, he became hypertensive due to low blood pressure. He again went into cardiac arrest and slipped away from us.

GURU died far too young but he was, and we are, proud of all his many legendary musical contributions.

The family is not aware of any foundations established by GURU. We know and understand that countless fans want to express their condolences and love and, to that end, we are planning a memorial event in the near future that will be all-inclusive. Please look for further details from the family as they become available.

Just like everyone suspected when "Guru's" letter was released.  Solar is shady as fuck.

I Left My Heart In San Francisco

Home Is Where The Heart Is, By Jeremy Fish

I saw Mayer Hawthorne on Thursday night at the Warfield. He sounded really good but he did a pretty short set since he was slotted as the opener for Passion Pit.  He busted out the ELO cover of "Mr. Blue Sky" that Jeffro covered in this post though and ripped it.  What surprised me was the fact that he didn't do his cover of, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco."  You know the one that was discussed here.  The one that he was releasing on heart shaped USBs because it was his last tour stop.  Figured he would have worked that shit in somehow but maybe he let it out at the after party that I did not attend.

Either way the set was solid and I got the shirt/usb package dealy, which I will now share with you, you can wear the shirt on alternate Tuesdays.

DJ Greybush Presents: Jams Fo Yo Grams

I see you Gertrude, shaking dat azz!!  *Points at old lady in a chair gumming her boiled carrots.*  These right here are "Jams Fo Yo Grams," or lullabies for teenagers.  They have a little bit of oomph for old people music, they might get your false hip a swaying.  Make your blue permed hair stand on edge.  Just don't try and spin this mix for the 8th graders, they like stuff like the Real McCoy, songs sung by Germans about Tawk Tawking and running away to "Another Night."  At least that's how it was in my day, minus the liking German's part, we sort of had issues with them in my day, but that's a story for another day.
Seriously?  This was popular?  The 90's were gross.

The Real McCoy

That was like showing you the 3 so you consider sleeping with the 5 at the bar.  I apologize for that, as a child of that exact type of catastrophe, I can say that it doesn't end well for anyone.  But hey, now anything you listen to will sound that much better, it's only through the bitter that we can appreciate the sweet.  This track from the mix is a 10 no matter what though so that whole exercise was pretty pointless.  I just wanted to take you back to that awkward cafeteria of segregated genders awkwardly gyrating in a stand off, the smell of fake smoke and puberty wafting through the air.

Songs and the mix after the jump.

Reflection Eternal Tour Dates

Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek accepted each others friend requests and not only have a new album coming out but a tour as well. These two were responsible for some of the go to jams in my college days.  We used to put on "This Means You".....and then continue to sit there not doing much of anything.  But boy did that song make me want to get hyped.  If only getting hyped didn't require so much energy.

OMG!!11!!! THE GREATEST NEWS EVER!!!111!!!!

Holy shit, breaking news everyone.  When I heard this news this morning it was like the heavens parted and I was blasted in the FACE with a ray of sunshine direct from God's urethra.  Wait is that good or bad?

Maybe it was like something more enjoyable happened.  It was like I found out my probation was over and I could finally take off this stupid ankle monitor.  Telling the judge, "It Chaffs, your honor and I have very sensitive skin" is not enough reason to be set free.  Much like the feeling I expect to have on that very momentous day this tidbit of news filled my belly with exuberant feelings of joyous rapture.  Rapture is another word for krispy kremes right?  I ate like 12 today.

So what's this news you say, and afterward someone asks you why you are talking to your computer monitor.  Get ready because you are about to be SOOO disappointed excited!!!

Phil Fucking Collins is releasing an album of all Soul covers!!!!  Rejoice!!!  Finally someone will do these songs justice.  Save them from their mediocre and craptacular original states and elevate them to art, Collins style.  Hopefully with his nuanced approach he can make people think, "My Girl" is about the lady he watched drown after being attacked by killer bees...too meta?  I've always thought when listening to classic motown, you know what would make this like 1 million times better?  If instead of Martha and the Vandals singing it was someone who better represented soul, someone like Phil Collins.  I usually said Michael Bolton but Collins will do.  Well you can thank me for all those nightly prayers I logged with the sunshine pisser upstairs.  Your wishes have been granted.  A quote from the man himself.

"It shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone that I've finally made an album of my favourite Motown songs. These songs, along with a couple of Dusty Springfield tracks, a Phil Spector/Ronettes tune, and one by the Impressions, make up the tapestry, the backdrop, of my teenage years," Collins said.
"I remember it as if it was yesterday, going to the Marquee Club in London's Soho and watching The Who, The Action, and many others, playing these songs. In turn I'd go out the next day to buy the original versions. My idea, though, was not to bring anything new to these already great records, but to try to recreate the sounds and feelings that I had when I first heard them," added the 59-year-old artist."

Hopefully he does a cover of Seal's song "A Change Is Gonna Come."

There is one thing I can give Phil props for, I mean besides the "I can't dance" video, and that is that he accepted his baldness and shaved his head.  Good call on that one.  Seriously people you don't fool anyone.  Is it wrong to dismiss this album before it has even dropped?  Maybe,. but do you seriously ever think soulful and Phil Collins would be used in the same sentence?

Here is a glimpse of what it might be like Phil doing a Curtis song from that horrible tribute to Curtis album from 1994.

Audience Participation: California Soul

So I was listening to Greybush's Soul Mix 4 and Soul Mix 3 and noticed that he blessed us with two different version of California Soul (originally written by Ashford and Simpson). I looked in my iTunes library to find out just how many versions of this banger I had and I found 4. I personally like the Messengers version the most, but I am more interested in finding out which version you like best. And for those of you that watch a lot of TV, yes, this is the song used in the Dockers commercial featuring San Francisco.

Marlena Shaw -
California Soul (From Soul Mix 3)

The Messengers -
California Soul (From DJ Shadow's Product Placement)

Diplo -
California Soul (Remix from Soul Mix 4)

Gerald Wilson
- California Soul (also from DJ Shadow's Product Placement)

BONUS: Gangstarr - Check the Technique

"
