Upcoming Shows

March

Friday, March 16th, Questlove will be spinning a DJ set at the Independent.  I have seen him spin before and he puts down some solid stuff, which you would expect from a music junkie like him.  The problem for me is I don't do the dancing in the club thing...and I am old.  If you enjoy getting your groove on though, I recommend checking him out.  $30 tickets can be found here.

Sharon Van Etten and The War On Drugs are coming to the Independent on Wednesday, March 21st. Tickets are $20 plus service charges and doors open at 7:30. Sharon was previously on Yes Homo Pop Princess Mix 6, and possibly some of the Indie mixes. Grab tickets for the show here. (Update: Tickets are sold out)

Bahamas was featured on Indie Mix 11 with his cover of Wreckless Eric's, "Whole Wide World."  He will be at Brick and Mortar in San Francisco on, Wednesday, March 21st.  This is the same night as the Sharon Van Etten show, but relax, the decision of which show to attend has been made for you.  Sharon Van Etten tickets have sold out, Bahamas has not.  Aren't you glad you avoided that dilemma?  Grab $8-10 tickets for Bahamas here .

Yellow Ostrich, is coming to town on, Friday, March 23rd.  I like Yellow Ostrich's covers better than his original stuff.  I bought his new LP on vinyl and I wasn't super enthralled by it.  He does interesting things and at times he has it all locked in and the end product is great.  Other times I feel like it's some abstract experimental bedroom studio tinkering that I would rather not be a part of.  Would it be wrong to go to his show and tell him to perform a whole Beach House album?  Tickets are $12 here.

April

Wednesday, April 11th, M. Ward will be playing the Fillmore.Tickets are super money, clocking in at $42 after service charges.  Is it worth it to you?  If it is get them here.

The Sandwitches have been on a couple of mixes.  The last one being Indie Mix 10.  They will be at the Brick and Mortar in the city on, Thursday, April 12th.  Tickets are $10-12 and you can get them here.

This one is a biggie for me.  This is a dude that I check tour schedules for and plot his movements on my wall map with pins and string.  Well guess what?  That string is headed straight for the Fox in Oakland.  My days spent praying have paid off.  Andrew Bird will be coming to town Friday April 13th.  Tickets are on the pricier side at $37.50 before service charges, but it's Andrew fucking Bird!!!  *Tries to whistle and just spits on himself*  He has been on at least two mixes from the blog that I can think of.  You may remember his appearance on Indie Mix 10...or maybe not.  Either way grab tickets for what is sure to be an amazing show here.

If Andrew Bird isn't your thing you have options on April 13th.  Damien Jurado, Peter Wolf Crier, and Dear Indugu will be at the Bottom of The Hill.  Damien was actually on the very first indie mix I made for this site.  I feel like we have featured Peter Wold Crier before too but maybe their name has just been floating around my ipod.  Tickets are $12 and you can get them here.

Childish Gambino will also be at the Fox in April.  He stops into town on Thursday, April 19th.  Tickets are $25 before the service charges.  He loves Asian girls and Asian girls love him...just ask SK or DANakaDAN. He sings a bit too much for me, but I have really particular taste when it comes to hip hop, actually I am not even sure if this is completely hip hop. The straight hip hop joints he has done I have enjoyed though. His comedy comes through in a lot of his raps and I appreciate a witty emcee. He also gets really personal and I give props to a rapper that is unafraid to show that part of himself on stage.  One of his songs was on Hip Hop Mix 10. Grab tickets for the show here.

Bon Iver, forever known as Bonny bear to me, will vie for your attention on the same night as the Childish Gambino show.  He will be at the Bill Graham Civic Audiotorium on Thursday, April 19th.  Dude is a grammy winner now, so watch out!!  Tickets are $45 and you can get them here.

Tennis is a solid new band with sounds that are right in our wheelhouse here at Stereofat.  I know both Tres Ouias and I have featured them on previous mixes.  They will be at the Independent on Monday, April 30th...Monday??  Damn it!!!  If you are not a 60 year old like me then this will be a great show worth attending.  They are touring in support of their sophomore album.  Tickets are $13-15 and you can get them here.

May

I always said that I didn't like bands that were big enough to play stadiums.  To this day I have never been to a stadium concert.  People who play in stadiums are Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake, not exactly my cup of tea.  Stadium tickets are also super expensive and you end up being miles away from the stage.  I guess I am happy the Black Keys have made it to stadium level rockers, but I kind of doubt I will pay the ticket prices for this show at Oracle arena.  Tickets range from $47.25 to $64.30 and you can get them here.

Daptone Represent!!  Lee Fields and the Expressions are one of the few Daptone acts that I haven't managed to catch live.  That is a shame, but a shame that I can do something about.  They will be at the Brick and Mortar in SF on, Saturday, May 19th.  Tickets are a little pricer at $20-25, but they do have a lot of band members to feed.  Get yo tickets here.

June
Have you guys heard of Mayer Hawthorne?  Mayer has a headlining show at the Fillmore on, Saturday, June 16th.  Tickets will be $35 after service charges and will be available to purchase right here on March 4th.  He will also have a show with Foster The People as the headliners on Friday, June 29th at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. Tickets for that will be $37.50 and they are available here.

Upcoming Shows

September
Fleet Foxes are playing the Greek theater in Berkeley on Saturday September 10th. Tickets are $39.50 plus service charges and can be found here.

Fleet Foxes - Grown Ocean from Fleet Foxes on Vimeo.

Zion-I, who are always playing around here.  They live in Oakland after all, will be playing the Fillmore on Friday, September 16th.  The show is always worth going to, tickets are $35 including service charges and are available here.

Bon Iver will be at the Greek as well on Thursday, September 22nd. Tickets are $39.50 plus service charges, grab them here.

TV On The Radio will be at the Fox theater in Oakland. I like the Fox a lot more than the Greek. Much more intimate, the Greek is awesome, it's just so big. Anyway, they will be here on Tuesday, September 27th. $35 plus charges. Get yo tickets here.

Braids who I am a big fan of will be at The Bottom of The Hill in San Francisco. Their show is on Tuesday, September 27th, the same night as the TV On The Radio show. Tickets are $10 and you can get them here.

Braids - Plath Heart from blair neal on Vimeo.

October
Toro Y Moi has a two show stint at the Great American Music Hall.  Saturday and Sunday, October 1st and 2nd.  $21 tickets are available here

On October 8th and 9th, Girls and Sonny and the Sunsets will be at the Great American Music Hall.  This should be an excellent show. Tickets are $20 and are available here

The Drums are playing the Independent on Friday October 14th.  Tickets are $15 and are available here. The Drums have previously been featured on a couple of Indie mixes, specifically Indie Mix 5.

Thao and the Get Down Stay Down, whom I still carry a very bright torch for will be at the Independent on, Sunday October 16th.  I think I can safely put this in the will definitely attend category.  Also in addition to them being awesome, the tickets are only $16.  Grab them here.

November
Lykke Li will be at the Fox Theater on Wednesday, November 9th.  Tickets are $35.  Grab them here.  I like to change the lyrics of her song, "I'm your prostitute," into a kid friendly song called, "I'm your bandicoot." I may attend just to pitch her the idea and show her my costume.

I am a big fan of Blind Pilot. I will be going to this one for sure.  They are playing the Great American Music Hall on Saturday, November 19th. Grab tickets for $18 here.

Eye Candy

Looks That Kill - HD from Yuki 7 on Vimeo.
Kevin Dart and Elizabeth Ito's new book/DVD, "Looks that Kill," has a new promo video and it looks pretty good. It stars 1960's spy girl Yuki 7, and her secret agent colleagues, the Gadget Girls. I have been a fan of Kevin Dart's art from some of his earlier work, I think these may have been the first pieces I saw from him. Which then led to me doing a little research and finding his awesome fake movie posters, like this one. Check out more of his work at his site.

Dayam that's a line up.  Pete Rock and Smif-N-Wessun with Styles P and Sean Price.  Part of Nahright's "One Shot video series."

Posted this before but here is Bon Iver's video for his single, "Calgary" again. Another reminder that he will be playing the Greek theater on Thursday September 22nd. Grab tickets here.

Gracie- Untitled from andrew balasia on Vimeo.
Very summery video from Gracie. Way more about them at Friends With Both Arms, one of the sites I regularly seek "inspiration" from. Seriously check out her site, she has great taste and finds all sorts of indie goodness. Take for example the video below as well, that her and her organization, Invisible Children produced as part of their "Silver Series."

Jeremy Messersmith was previously featured on this Indie Mix.

Fashawn produced by J. Cole.  Nothing wrong in that description.

Upcoming Shows

July

David Bazan will be at The Independent in San Francisco on Wednesday, July 13th. Tickets are $15 and you can get them here.

David Bazan - Please Baby Please - 3 of 11 from RaisingHeller on Vimeo.

Slum Village or what remains of them will be at the New Parish in Oakland. The show is on Friday, July 22nd. Tickets are $23.09 total and you can get them here. I saw Elzhi awhile back when he came through with Black Milk, he puts on a good show, really clear on the mic, which unfortunately can not be expected from all hip hop artists.

Elzhi - Halftime Official video from GerardVictor.com on Vimeo.

Foreign Exchange will be at The New Parish on Tuesday, July 26th. Tickets are $28.37 total and you can get them here. I like Little Brother (when I say Little Brother I mean Phonte, Pooh, AND 9th, LB minus 9th is not the same) better than Foreign Exchange. I am not as into the R&B style they have going on. A little too much crooning, not enough rapping for my taste.

The Foreign Exchange - Maybe She'll Dream Of Me (Official Music Video directed by Matt Koza) from The Foreign Exchange on Vimeo.

Kurt Vile
Thurston Moore
Thurston Moore and Kurt Vile give you options on Tuesday, July 26th. Hip hop or Indie? Moore and Vile will be at The Great American Music Hall. Tickets are $26, available here.

"Freeway" by Kurt Vile from Olive on Vimeo.

The Cool Kids are also having a show at The New Parish on Thursday, July 28th. Tickets range from $20-25. Get them here. I saw these guys when they were part of the openers for Q-Tip a couple years back. Definitely worth checking out. They got that bass that will knock a filling loose. Love their throwback style.

August

Adele will be coming back to The Greek theater to make up for her previously canceled show. She arrives on Sunday, August 14th. Tickets are $45 for general admission, $65 for reserved seating...I don't think I have been to a concert at The Greek that was anything but general admission. Tickets are still available here.

ADELE - Rolling In The Deep - In Studio from DUKOFF on Vimeo.

Reggie Watts who is both a comedian and singer will be at the Independent in San Francisco on Wednesday, August 17th. Tickets are $20, get them here. We saw him as the opener for Conan O'Brien when he came through on his, "Banned From TV" tour. He also made a video appearance during Donald Glover's opening set at the Childish Gambino show. Funny guy with funny friends.

REGGIE WATTS: IMPROVISED DECONSTRUCTION from Ronen V on Vimeo.

Bilal, that crazy ass dude from Detroit will be at The New Parish on Monday, August 29th. Tickets are $20-25 and can be found here. Whenever I hear his name I just think of that Black Milk line, "So Detroit like I'm Bilal."

September

Fleet Foxes are playing the Greek theater in Berkeley on Saturday September 10th. Tickets are $39.50 plus service charges and can be found here.

Ten Bon Iver covers, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. Album release and a bonus throwback Cee-Lo video

Bon Iver's new album is out in the wild now and I have heard good things.  I saw that the album artwork or promotional artwork was by a guy I am a huge fan of, Gregory Euclide. Excellent choice in art, Euclide had a few pieces in a group show at White Walls in San Francisco a couple years back and I was all sorts of drooly over them.  Since then he has continued to make excellent work and put on some super solid solo shows.

Stereogum has been kind enough to provide you all with Bon Iver's "Ten best" cover songs, available for free downnload right here.

The songs up for grabs include:

1. The Outfield- Your Love
2. Peter Gabriel- Come Talk To Me
3. John Prine/Chain of Sorrow- Bruised Orange
4. Feist- The Park
5. Vashti Bunyan- Train Song
6. Tom Petty- Crawling Back To You
7. Kathleen Edwards- Mercury
8. Okkervil- Blue Tulip
9. Red Hayes a& Jack Rhodes- A Satisfied Mind
10. Annie Lennox- Why

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.'s full album, "It's A Corporate World" just dropped the other day.  It includes all of the songs off of the Stereofat favorite, "The Horsepower EP" plus some other great tracks.  I think we should support them.  You can get their new album, "It's A Corporate World" on amazon right here.  A word about the album release from the boys themselves can be found here.

Maybe it was his judging gig on, "The Voice" or the fact that I tend to think of him fondly every now and then, but for some reason this Cee-lo video has been playing in  my head lately.  Do you guys remember when this first dropped?  He has always been so batshit crazy...and AWESOME!!!
