Indie Mix 11

One amazing piece from Doyle's current show.

Thomas Doyle has been doing amazing sculptures for a while now.  His current show at LeBasse Projects is no exception.   Check out the rest of the show here.

Eye Candy

The Shrine / An Argument from Sean Pecknold on Vimeo.

This is a really well done video from one of my favorite bands, Fleet Foxes.

This will be on the next hip hop mix, which is just waiting to get zipped up and posted. STS who we have been featuring a lot lately, once again kills his verse on this. Shaun Boothe rips it as well, love the ending to his verse. If you have two emcees tearing shit up over an Otis Redding sample, then you have my attention.

This is totally not music related. It also may not be as awesome to those of you who venture outside every once in awhile and do not know every meme in existence but I thought this was pretty well done. Do you ever watch those internet clip shows and find out that you have seen all of them already? Just me? Yeah I think I have a problem...and a Doctorate in useless internet content.

Awesome video of the Muppet singers at Jim Henson's memorial in 1990. Touching, funny, amazing. I love me some Muppets. Bonus Fraggles appearance at the end, damn I loved that show too.

I really enjoyed, "Drive." The music had an integral part of the feeling that the movie was going for. Here is how you ruin that tone, I give you, "Drive" set to shitty music.

Great video of, My Morning Jacket, at the Fox theater. Directed by, Scott Compton via. My Morning Jacket will be in town again on Friday, December 2nd. The craziest part? Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are opening for them. Tickets are $45 plus service charge and you can get them here.

The blog I saw this on called this the worst music ever made. I am inclined to agree. This is the video by SuperHeavy, which is a supergroup consisting of Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Dave Stewart, Damian Marley, and Allah Rakha Rahman. Joss sounds and looks good, Damian does that R. Kelly talk sing thing that while amusing was never the way I enjoyed music. The part that literally made me start laughing out loud was Mick Jagger. Seriously try and watch his parts with a straight face. Que Ridiculo.

That's what the She's said

I know, I know, it's been awhile, does that mean that we can't just immediately get back to business? In the words of my life coach, can we not just go, "straight to third?" When he says it isn't even a question but more of a proclamation of intent that you really have no choice in, he says those words and his hand is already...sorry that's not what this post is about. Or is it? *Keith Morrison voice*

While I have been away I have not been without music. We have hippy drum circles at occupy. Tear gas canisters make a terrible percussion sound when bounced off of a peaceful protester's head. The tinkling of urine in our hobo encampment is like softly raking a cymbal. We chant, we sing, we unify!!! Shattered glass and shaking spray cans are the music of my revolution!!!...I totally wasn't at occupy, I did get some new video games though so you can draw your own conclusions as to where I have been. Arkham city!!! *Flourishes cape and spills coffee mug*

Now this is where the post could have began. We went to see Thao and the Get Down Stay Down at the Great American Music Hall.  This was at the tail end of a crazy weekend.  Congrats to Mr. and Mrs. Jeffro!!  The opening band for Thao was, The She's. They were awesome and adorable. Check out their myspace here.

The group consists of Sami Perez, Hannah Valente, Eva Treadway, and Sinclair Riley. The crazy thing is that all of them are about sixteen years old. Apparently they have been playing together since mid-elementary school. They site influences like, the Morning Benders, the Donnas, Beach Boys, and Girls, which proves they are way cooler than you when you were a sixteen year old. I think when I was sixteen despite all my rage I was still just a rat in a cage or I was waking up in the morning and stepping outside taking a big breath and getting real high, or was that middle school?
What's going on?  My name is Mystery, I'm here to talk about kino-escalation and bouncing.  Everyone creepy as shit?  Good.  Everyone have their goggles?  Good.  Let's do this, you like magic, guuurl?

It doesn't really matter, what does matter is how great these girls were.  Thanks to Sami’s years of experience in the SF Girls Chorus they have awesome vocal harmonies. They are like a more alive Mountain man on surfboards with more instrumentation. They kind of remind me of Tennis, Best Coast, or The Ronettes and that's not a bad thing.  60's influenced girl pop, which is a pretty close approximation of the most perfect word combination for my musical leanings and interests. Their stage banter was so great too, they were seriously adorable, and I don't use that word a lot, I stopped after that incident at that Biker bar, what? It was an adorable lazy eye.
The She's at The Great American Music Hall

They were just so happy to be there on stage and they made you instantly happy to be there with them. Thao said she saw them at the Noe Valley farmer's market which in itself is fucking adorable. *Thao smells the kale, music drifts above the arugula and past the artisan falafel maker, her ears perk up* "You there!! Awesome band full of bad assery and happiness inducing musical skills, you are coming with me!!" *They all ride off on an extra long horse* I am pretty sure that's how it went.

At the end of their set I bought a copy of their ep from one of their mothers, literally, no joke, how great is that?  Check out their Myspace for samples of their music. They are really talented musicians and a solid band. They have a great knack for song arrangement and structure. Here is there video for, "Running."

If you would like to see them in person, SK and I will be going to their record release party at the Bottom of the Hill on Saturday Dec. 3rd. They are playing with Tijuana Panthers and Melted Toys. Grab your tickets for $10 here

Holiday Road Mix

Like many of you, my wife and I will be hitting the roads quite a bit in the coming months, so I threw together a mostly upbeat mix to provide a soundtrack to our travels. Hope you enjoy it. Btw, it's called 11/11/11 only because I finalized the track order on that day. Happy holidays! And yes, there will be a Christmas Mix coming soon...

Two New Mixes

Here are two new mixes I've been slowly tweaking over the past couple months. The first one is a collection of neo-folk stuff (a lot of which is from Bath, UK -- apparently they are having a huge folk revival there, who knew?). The kernel of the mix were a few songs I couldn't stop listening to from the Wilco & Billy Bragg album of Wood Guthrie covers, "Mermaid Avenue" (a must have, btw). Then I slowly accumulated folky/alt-country/alt-rocky stuff that I thought worked together (e.g. Iron&Wine, Joanna Newson, Laura Marling, War on Drugs). Hope you like it.

Neo Folk & Friends Mix

The second mix is my usual indie-rock stuff with a chunk of electronica (e.g. James Blake & Bon Iver, Toro y Moi, Washed Out, Neon Indian, St. Vincent), a couple harder rocking songs (Wu Lyf, Crystal Antlers), some more John Maus (buy his new record!), and finished off with a random hip hop song by Kendrick Lamar (I love hip hop, but I never have enough new stuff for a whole mix; plus DJ Greybush handles it so much better than I could). Enjoy.

Eye Candy

Models plus Jay-z equals...I guess I'll post it.

Ha this is a pretty awesome video by Diego Stocco. I will try this at my office, I will loop the yelp of my co-worker when I spill coffee on them with the sound of my tipping over the copy machine and breaking glass by throwing a stapler through my computer monitor. "I'll write YOU up!!! This is art!!!" *Sticks mic in whimpering co-workers face.* "Excellennnt"

Diego Stocco - Music From A Dry Cleaner from Diego Stocco on Vimeo.

Not totally my kind of music, but I could watch him dance for hours. "I could eat a peach for hours."

I seriously had a video of Hitler singing the theme to the Jefferson's that I was going to post. In lieu of that I offer something equally offensive? I am not sure, my offensive meter is way out of whack these days.

Album Review: Blind Pilot

I have had the new Blind Pilot album for a little over a month now.  When I first heard it I can't say I immediately loved it.  Actually let me show you what I wrote in an email to Tres Ouais.

"It's only ten tracks and 38 minutes so I was able to give it a listen last night.  It's not as good as the last album.  It seems like they are happier, which is good for them, but I liked the sad yearning melancholy songs off the last album.

The instrumentals lean more towards country and they don't seem as nuanced or intimate to me.  I thought the last album had a great stripped down, slow build tempo.  This seems more jangly and seems like it comes from all angles, several layers that blend with each other and sort of get in the way.  I'll have to give it another listen, it's better than a lot of what's going on but it's not the greatest thing ever."

Yeah...don't email me about a new album unless you want a pompous dissection of said album.  *Adjusts ascot*  I haven't dedicated a huge amount of more time listening to it, but from what I have heard I don't really know what I was talking about the first time.  My new review is that  it sounds like a pretty solid album.  I was totally head over heels in love with their last album so I may have approached the first listen expecting to be let down.  I stand by the not as good as the last album statement, but there are some really good songs on the new one.  I think from now on I will just recommend albums and not review them. You can grab the new album from their site here.  Don't forget that they are playing the Great American Music Hall on Saturday, November 19th. You can grab tickets for $18 here.

Live video of one of my favorites off of the new album, "White Apple."

One of the happier ones and the title track, "We Are The Tide."

Bonus: "Ovideo" off of their last album, "3 Rounds and A Sound." Uhhh, that album was so good.
